چکیده

We augment a standard dictator game to investigate how preferences for an environmental project relate to willingness to limit others’ choices. We explore this issue by distinguishing three student groups: economists, environmental economists, and environmental social scientists. We find that people are generally disposed to grant freedom of choice, but only within certain limits. In addition, our results are in line with the widely held belief that economists are more selfish than other people. Yet, against the notion of consumer sovereignty, economists are not less likely to restrict others’ choices and impose restrictions closer to their own preferences than the other student groups.

The Market for Charitable Giving

T hrough good and bad economic times, charitable gifts have continued to roll in largely unabated over the past half century. In a typical year, total charitable gifts of money now exceed 2 percent of gross domestic product. Moreover, charitable giving has nearly doubled in real terms since 1990, and the number of nonprofi t organizations registered with the IRS grew by nearly 60 percent from 1...

Good News, Bad News, and Social Image: The Market for Charitable Giving

We develop a simple theory and conduct a laboratory experiment to explore the e↵ect of information about charities’ performances and its public visibility on the intensive margins of charitable giving (i.e. existing donors). Ethical Motives and Charitable Contributions in Contingent Valuation: Empirical Evidence from Social Psychology and Economics

Contingent valuation of the environment has proven popular amongst environmental economists in recent years and has increased the role of monetary valuation in public policy. Thus, good scope exists for interdisciplinary research in the area of economics and psychology...

Toward an understanding of why suggestions work in charitable fundraising: theory and evidence from a natural field experiment

People respond to those who ask. Within the charitable fundraising community, the power of the ask represents the backbone of most fundraising strategies. Despite this, the optimal design of communication strategies has received less formal attention. For their part, economists have recently explored how communication affects empathy, altruism, and giving rates to charities. Our study takes a s...

How much to donate, and to whom? The effects of framing of charitable solicitations on moral judgment

We study how the framing of the charitable “ask” affects moral judgment and thus how much to donate and to whom. We develop a theoretical framework grounded in insights developed by Adam Smith in his Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759) and psychological construal level theory. The framework rests on the effects of variations in the salience of donors’ financial interest and in their distance/deta...
